The ball is similar to a volleyball but may be slightly larger. While in volleyball the ball is hit or volleyed throughout play, in throwball the ball is thrown over the net, where a member of the other team tries to catch the ball and quickly throw it back across the net.

A throwball match is played in best of three sets format in which the team that wins two sets first wins the match. Each set is played for 15 points.

According to the Throwball Federation of India, Throwball is thought to have originated from a recreational sport which was popular among women in England and Australia in 1930’s. Jagat Singh Chauhan, an alumnus of YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) is believed to have brought it in Chennai, India where it was played as women’s sport in 1940’s.
